Obama says reparations 'justified' but 'politics of White resistance' made it 'nonstarter' to propose

Former President Barack Obama blamed "the politics of White resistance and resentment" as the reason why he didn't push financial reparations for Black Americans during his presidency.

On Monday, Obama and rock and roll legend Bruce Springsteen released the second episode of their new podcast, "Renegades: Born in the USA," where they spoke about race relations in the United States.

Toward the end of the episode, the two hosts spoke about reparations to Black Americans and whether or not the controversial policy would come to fruition.

Obama said he believes reparations are "justified" and that "there’s not much question that the wealth… the power of this country was built in significant part — not exclusively, maybe not even the majority of it, but a large portion of it — was built on the backs of slaves."

The former president claimed that a reparations proposal didn’t make its way through the lawmaking process during his presidency due to "the politics of White resistance and resentment." 

"And what I saw during my presidency was the politics of White resistance and resentment. The talk of 'welfare queens' and the talk of the 'undeserving' poor. And the backlash against affirmative action," Obama said.

"All that made the prospect of actually proposing any kind of coherent, meaningful reparations program struck me as, politically, not only a nonstarter but potentially counterproductive."

Obama went on to say it was "perfectly understandable why working-class White folks, middle-class White folks, folks who are having trouble paying the bills or dealing with student loans, wouldn't be too thrilled" about the prospect of "a massive program that is designed to deal with the past but isn't speaking to their future."

Obama appears to have changed his position on reparations over the years. He opposed reparations during his 2008 presidential campaign, arguing that "the best reparations we can provide are good schools in the inner city and jobs for people who are unemployed." 

Bills regarding reparations have been introduced to Congress for over three decades, with the most recent being a proposal from Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas.

Jackson Lee introduced H.R. 40 to the House of Representatives, which aims to set up the Committee to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African-Americans. According to the bill’s summary, the committee "shall examine slavery and discrimination in the colonies and the United States from 1619 to the present and recommend appropriate remedies."

President Biden hasn't endorsed reparations outright, but he has voiced his support for forming a commission to study the issue. White House press secretary Jen Psaki reaffirmed this position last week to reporters.

Probe finds Smith College student was not victim of racism for ‘eating while black’

A black student’s allegations that she was targeted for “eating while black” at a private Massachusetts college were deemed unfounded, according to an investigation of the incident.

Oumou Kanoute, then a rising sophomore at Smith College, had claimed that all she “did was be black” when a janitor called security on her when he found her in a closed lounge in July 2018.

 

 

But a 35-page investigation carried out by an outside law firm found no evidence of discrimination, the New York Times reported.

The findings were issued in October 2018 but not widely reported.

The incident began when Kanoute went inside a cafeteria in a dormitory that was reserved for a summer camp program for young children, the outlet reported.

Since students were not supposed to use the area, a cafeteria worker Jackie Blair reminded her of that fact but then decided to drop the issue, the outlet reported.

A janitor, who was in his 60s and had poor vision, then noticed a figure in the distance eating in a closed-off lounge area of the dorm.

School guidance called for employees not to confront strangers on their own — so the janitor notified security about the person, who turned out to be Kanoute, the outlet reported.

The janitor, who reportedly later claimed he couldn’t tell the person’s gender because it was dark, told dispatchers that there’s someone “sitting there laying down in the living room.”

“I didn’t approach her or anything but he seems out of place,” he reportedly said.

A security officer then drove over and engaged in a polite conversation with the student, who recorded the encounter on video and later posted it to Facebook, the paper reported.

“It’s outrageous that some people question my being at Smith, and my existence overall as a woman of color,” Kanoute wrote on Facebook about the private, all-women school.

Smith College president Kathleen McCartney called Kanoute to apologize and placed the janitor on leave the following day, the outlet reported.

But the subsequent investigation found that there was no evidence of wrongdoing and that the janitor was following policy.

“Based on this information, the investigation determined that the Caller’s had a legitimate, non-discriminatory reason for believing it was ‘out of place’ for a person to be in the Tyler living room,” the report said.

Lady Gaga’s father told The Post Thursday the family is devastated over the dognapping of the star’s two beloved French Bulldogs, who were stolen at gunpoint in Los Angeles late Wednesday. 

“We’re just sick over it, it’s really horrible,” Joe Germanotta, a Manhattan restaurateur, said by phone.

“It’s like someone took one of your kids.”

On Wednesday just before 10 p.m., Gaga’s dog walker Ryan Fischer, 30, was out for a stroll with the crooner’s three pups, Gustav, Koji and Miss Asia, when an unknown suspect shot him from a white car and stole Koji and Gustavo, according to police, TMZ and Gaga’s dad.

The dad said his pop star daughter, who is currently in Italy, has already spoken with him “several times” about the incident.

“Just try to be strong and remember that they’re together,” Germanotta said he told a distraught Gaga. 

“They’re comforting each other,” the dad said of the two pups.

Gaga is offering a $500,000 reward for the safe return of Koji and Gustav, no questions asked, and her dad is pleading for them to be recovered. 

He wasn’t aware of Fischer’s condition but sources told TMZ he is recovering well after he was transported to an area hospital late Wednesday.

Images taken from the scene show Fischer, who the Daily Mail reported was shot four times, writhing on the ground, clinging to Miss Asia.

The Los Angeles Police Department was unable to confirm to The Post the number of times Fischer was hit, saying only that he was shot.

Six left-wing Jewish organizations asked US President Joe Biden's administration on Tuesday to revoke a policy adopted under his predecessor Donald Trump to label goods from Judea and Samaria, more commonly known as the West Bank, as "Made in Israel."

In a letter sent to US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas that was shared with The Huffington Post, the groups claimed former President Donald Trump's policy was "harmful to essential interests of Israelis and Palestinians alike" and would increase tensions in the region if it goes into full effect.

J Street, the New Israel Fund, Partners for Progressive Israel, Ameinu, Americans for Peace Now, and T'ruah: The Rabbinic Call for Human Rights all signed on to the letter.

In December, weeks before Trump left office, a policy went into effect requiring products manufactured in Israeli-controlled areas of Judea and Samaria, known as Area C, to be labeled as "Product of Israel" or "Made in Israel" when exported to the United States.

Companies have until March 23 to comply with the new guidelines.

Israel controls all of Area C, which comprises some 60% of the West Bank, under the Oslo Accords. Areas A and B are under Palestinian self-governance.

In their letter, the six organizations argued, "By inaccurately and misleadingly treating settlement and other products from Area C of the West Bank as if they were made in Israel, the [Trump-era notification] attempts to reverse decades of US policy that makes a firm distinction between Israel and the West Bank. It runs counter to the Biden administration's policy of opposing settlement activity and unilateral annexation of territory as harmful to the prospects for the peaceful, just resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."

US President Joe Biden has the option to rescind Trump's policy or decline to enforce it.

As you read this you will likely recall that the Palestinian Authority (PA) has had some “issues” over the last 27 years with abandoning terror.

As Israel Today has reported in the past, one of these issues is the fact that the PA pays salaries to the families of suicide bombers and convicted terrorists sitting in Israeli prisons. Rewarding terrorists is obviously unacceptable to Israel, and it is clearly not helping the so-called peace process. Nations contributing to the Palestinian Authority have stipulated that such payments must cease.

However, Palestinian Media Watch recently reported that the payments have not ceased but rather have been lumped into an accounting phrase called “PLO institutions.” These payments amounted to at least $US 159 million US dollars in 2020. The trick the PA used was to not make the payments directly, but rather transfer the money to the PLO which then made the payments. [The main donors to the PA have been the European Union and the United States, as well as Muslim nations to a more limited extent.]

House Democrats ask Biden to give up sole power to launch nuclear bomb

Over thirty House Democrats are asking President Biden to consider renouncing his authority to launch nuclear weapons.

In a letter sent Tuesday but publicized Wednesday, 31 lawmakers led by Reps. Jimmy Panetta (D-Calif.) and Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) urge the commander in chief to “consider modifying the decision-making process the United States uses in its command and control of nuclear forces.”

“As president, two of your most critical and solemn duties are the security of the country and the safeguarding of its nuclear arsenal,” the letter reads, noting the president’s sole authority to order the use of nuclear weapons assures keeping them under civilian control.

“However, vesting one person with this authority entails real risks,” Panetta and Lieu continued.

“Past presidents have threatened to attack other countries with nuclear weapons or exhibited behavior that caused other officials to express concern about the president’s judgment,” the two said, referencing former President Donald Trump’s very public feud with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

In terms of alternatives, the two California Democrats suggested a number of options.

One would be to require that the vice president and speaker of the House of Representatives concur with the president’s decision to strike.

Another option would be requiring certifications from the secretary of defense that the strike order was valid, as well as the attorney general that it was legal.

The two lawmakers also suggested requiring a Congressional declaration of war and specific approval from Congress on the strike.

The last option they suggested was creating a permanent council of Congressional leaders that would hold regular deliberations with the president and their administration on national security issues.

That council would be required to be consulted before the launch of any nuclear weapon.

Panetta is the son of Leon Panetta, who served as Defense Secretary and CIA director under President Obama and was chief of staff to President Clinton.

The White House did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment on the letter.

House Armed Services Committee Chairman Adam Smith (D-Wash.) did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment on his stance on the president’s nuclear authority.

“While any president would presumably consult with advisors before ordering a nuclear attack, there is no requirement to do so,” the letter states, “The military is obligated to carry out the order if they assess it is legal under the laws of war.”

“Under the current posture of U.S. nuclear forces, that attack would happen in minutes.”

Fry’s Electronics goes out of business permanently, closes all stores

SAN JOSE — The iconic Fry’s Electronics, a destination for geeks before the world turned geeky, ended a 36-year run Wednesday and closed all its stores.

A Bay Area institution that opened its first store in Sunnyvale in 1985, Fry’s quickly became a shopping and cultural destination, with themed stores that sold everything from candy to routers to refrigerators, cameras and computers.

“For Silicon Valley engineers, Fry’s was the go-to place,” said Tim Bajarin, principal analyst with Campbell-based Creative Strategies, which tracks the tech sector. “Tech engineers went there not only to buy electronics but also to get snacks.”

In a statement on its website, the San Jose-based company blamed the shutdown of its 31 stores in nine states on the challenges of the pandemic and changes in the retail industry.  The company was hit hard when customers began rejecting brick-and-mortar outlets for shopping online.

Fry’s executives did not return phone calls seeking additional comment.

The company’s struggles have been widely telegraphed. Customers complained of bare shelves and stores began closing. The Western-themed Palo Alto store closed in late 2019 and the Campbell store with an Egyptian pyramid theme closed in November.

At the time of the closing announcement, Fry’s had Bay Area stores in San Jose, Sunnyvale, Fremont, and Concord.

When Brian King, a video producer for an autonomous car company, moved to the Bay Area five years ago and started working at a technology firm, he was immediately ushered to a store he knew well from his time in Southern California.

“One of my managers just drove me to Fry’s and said, ‘Buy what you need. Get your cables, get your keyboard, let’s get you working.’”

It was Fry’s in Burbank where King had bought the materials to make his first PC, a “Hackintosh,” he said.

“It fostered people’s interest to build things,” said King, 35, of Redwood City. “You could go to Fry’s with your allowance and get these parts, get the tools, and ride your bike home with them. People would go to Fry’s to buy a soldering iron and to buy materials for do-it-yourself tech.”

The company was founded by three brothers, John, Randy and David, who started working in their father’s grocery business, Fry’s Food Stores.  The brothers were joined by Kathryn Kolder, who worked for a company that had sold PCs to the grocery business. They created stores that quickly became quirky go-to places, with a wide selection and low prices.

Bill Arnold, a Portola Valley resident who frequented Fry’s stores, believes the retailer played a significant role in the evolution of the Silicon Valley tech sector.

“Fry’s was a techie heaven in its heyday,” said Arnold, who frequently bought ethernet cables at Fry’s, but always avoided the temptation of buying a computer. “It was like having an old-style corner drug store, but one that was for electronics.”

At one point, revenues at Fry’s were robust enough that the company made Forbes’ list of the largest privately held companies in the United States, ranked by revenue. Forbes estimated that Fry’s generated $2.3 billion in revenue during 2018. By 2020, Fry’s had dropped off the list.

Bajarin and Arnold both said that Fry’s was so influential in its peak years that executives with tech, consumer electronics, and computer companies beat a path to Fry’s headquarters, hoping to get their products sold at the stores.

“The people behind the products would line up around the block at the corporate offices to try to convince the Fry’s executives to place their products on the store shelves,” Arnold said. “They knew that if they got the product into Fry’s that it would sell.”

The company would host executives at a golf course called The Institute, built by John Fry in Morgan Hill, Bajarin said. It is so exclusive and secretive that the Golf Pro Now website referred to it as “The Area 51 of California golf.”

But as it struggled, Fry’s switched over the last year to a consignment model. That meant Fry’s was only able to attract suppliers that were willing to be paid for their wholesale goods after Fry’s had sold the items at retail.

“The company will implement the shutdown through an orderly wind-down process that it believes will be in the best interests of the company, its creditors, and other stakeholders,” Fry’s stated on its website.

Fry’s also said it would work with its customers regarding orders that were recently placed or necessary repairs.

Ultimately, the demand for online shopping, as well as the push by Dell to offer custom-built personal computers via the internet might have been the key factors to doom Fry’s, Bajarin said.

Plus, Fry’s Electronics might have made a strategic error when it chose to expand well beyond its home roots in tech haven Silicon Valley.

“The buying patterns shifted and they probably expanded too much and over-extended themselves,” Bajarin said.

Still, Fry’s Electronics managed to march ahead for many years against fierce competition that killed off similar retailers earlier.

“Fry’s hung on a lot longer than CompUSA, The Good Guys, Circuit City, especially in Silicon Valley,” Bajarin said. “Those all bit the dust a lot sooner than Fry’s.”

Hunter Biden had a controversial affair with his brother Beau's grieving widow Hallie, while exchanging raunchy texts, 'partying', and even renting a house with her sister, DailyMail.com can exclusively reveal.

Hallie Biden's older sister, Elizabeth Secundy, who was recently separated from her husband of 15 years, referred to Hunter as her 'prince' and told him she loved him, in a series of text messages dating back to 2016. 

The pair's relationship was revealed in files and emails recovered from Hunter's laptop - the contents of which became public last year after it was abandoned at a Delaware computer shop.

While Hunter has promised to reveal details of his personal life and struggles with alcohol and drugs in his upcoming memoir, Beautiful Things, it is unclear whether Hunter has included details of his relationship with Secundy. 

The embattled father-of-five, now 51, split with his first wife Kathleen in 2015. When his brother Beau died of brain cancer that year, he became close to his grieving sister-in-law.

He and Hallie became a couple in 2016, according to an interview Hunter gave to the New Yorker two years ago.   

The unconventional relationship was first acknowledged publicly in March 2017, with Joe Biden issuing a statement giving his blessing to Hunter and Hallie, 46. 

But emails and texts from Hunter's abandoned laptop, logged on spreadsheets and reviewed by DailyMail.com, reveal his romantic relationship with his sister-in-law was even more complicated and scandalous.

A text message exchange recovered from the laptop hard drive revealed a sexual conversation between Hunter and Secundy from September 2016 - at the time he would have been dating Hallie. 

Hunter offered to teach Secundy 'how to masturbate' and referenced buying her 'panties'.

Secundy, now 49, also referred to Hunter as her 'prince' and told him she loved him in the texts. 

Files on the laptop suggest the relationship continued well into 2018, with one document showing they had rented a home together starting in July that year.   

Hunter's love life has already been a source of several scandals in the years since his split from his first wife Kathleen, the mother of his three daughters. 

After raising some eyebrows for dating his sister-in-law, the former lobbyist was then revealed to have fathered a child with a DC stripper whose paternity he initially denied, and later married his current wife, Melissa, just six days after meeting her in 2019. They too now have a one-year-old child, named after Hunter's late brother. 

Hunter found himself in hot water once again in 2020 when his laptop, that he reportedly had left at a Delaware computer store for repairs, fell into the hands of several media organizations and the FBI.

Photos recovered from the device showed him posing with a crack pipe in his mouth and partying with prostitutes.   

Documents from the laptop also exposed Hunter's controversial business dealings with Chinese oil giant CEFC, leading to a federal tax fraud investigation and a probe by the Senate Intelligence Committee into undue political influence by the Chinese.

The newly unearthed text messages between Hunter and Secundy could throw him into yet another controversy, and cast doubt on the timeline of his relationships he has previously given in interviews.

Hunter's older brother - Joe Biden's eldest son - Beau died from brain cancer in May 2015 at the age of 46, shaking the family to its core.

Hunter had struggled with drug and alcohol abuse for years, with Beau - a former Delaware attorney general - often helping him back to sobriety and encouraging him to go to rehab.  

Two months after Beau's death, Hunter fell off the wagon again and moved out of his home after breaking his sobriety pact with his wife Kathleen, according to an interview he gave to the New Yorker in 2019. 

The couple's divorce papers say they formally separated in October 2015, but it wasn't until December the following year that Kathleen officially filed to end their marriage. 

Files recovered from Hunter's laptop show the president's son drafted several long, emotional messages to his friends and family he was arguing with, and saved them as notes on his computer. 

In one undated note, Hunter refers to his ex-wife accusing him of 'fucking' Hallie the day after her husband died.

'It really really was devastating to me that you adopted Kathleen's narrative: 'Dad and Aunt Hallie (K's words exactly to me tonight on phone with girls in room) were FUCKING the day after Uncle Beau died,' he wrote. 

It is unclear who the note was addressed to and whether Hunter ended up sending it.

Another email also revealed Hallie had accused Hunter of being unfaithful to her early on in their relationship, while she had been trying to get him help for substance abuse. 

The email appears to contradict Hunter's previous statement about when he began his relationship with Hallie. In a 2019 interview with The New Yorker Hunter claimed their romantic relationship began in the fall of 2016. 

But the email suggests Hallie and Hunter were already romantically involved in July of that year.

'Hunter, you cheated on me,' Hallie wrote in an email dated July 18, 2016.

'You continued to cheat on me while I worked with [redacted] etc to get you help. Not only did you cheat on me, Viagra and Cialis, you actually bought her expensive gifts.

'I am stronger than you think. I'm not standing by while you treat me like dirt.'  

In an interview with the New Yorker addressing the relationship, Hunter said that he went on a vacation in the Hamptons with Hallie and her two children in August 2016 and started to become close to her.

But he said it wasn't until a few weeks later in the fall that they became a couple.

He told the magazine he was on the way to rehab in Arizona but ended up going on a binge in Los Angeles after taking crack he bought from a man in a homeless encampment.

He said he eventually checked into a rehab center in Arizona and Hallie flew to meet him at a resort spa after he checked out, where the two decided to begin their romantic relationship.

However, texts on his laptop show that he was already having extremely flirtatious conversations with Hallie's sister by then.

On September 8 that year, Hunter wrote to Secundy: 'We should shower together by FT [FaceTime] every morning or night when we're up at 3- stress relief - I'll teach you how to masturbate.'

'Wow re-reading that I can see how Joel [Secundy's 51-year-old husband] might have some doubts,' he added. 

'I'm up actually I've not gone down - when o [sic] get home tonight I'm calling you from the shower. Ly [Love you].'

Secundy separated from Joel, her husband and father of her three children, in 2015 after 15 years of marriage. Their divorce was finalized three years later.

The next day Hunter texted Secundy telling her he had been up late watching 'bad porno movies like I'm 13', and referred to buying her 'panties.'

'I have lulu panties. They are my only non Grammies besides the ones from you,' Secundy texted him.

The conversations showed Secundy had told Hunter she loved him, and repeatedly asked him for money.

On September 17 she wrote: 'I'm at Hal's alone for next 24hrs… call me,' and 'LYSM [Love You So Much]'.

Later that day she wrote 'your [sic] my only prince. I'm totally coming back for you.'

Hunter replied: 'Well get in a mood- not quite sure what mine is yet - but it's always nice to have you fun and loving me… I'm going to need it I think- except from your sister.'

A friend with knowledge of Hunter's relationships told DailyMail.com that Beau's former home soon became a very different environment with Hunter, Hallie and Secundy 'partying' there regularly. 

'They were living at Beau's old house and it just became a party house. They were obviously up 24/7 just partying,' the source said. 'They would sit out on the patio like crackheads almost.

Hunter's split with his wife only became public in December that year, when Kathleen filed for divorce citing Hunter's alleged drug-taking and use of prostitutes.

His flirtation with Secundy did not appear to have stopped his relationship with Hallie progressing. 

By March 2017, when several newspapers reported Hunter was in a relationship with his brother's widow, Joe Biden confirmed the news.

'We are all lucky that Hunter and Hallie found each other as they were putting their lives together again after such sadness,' he told the New York Post at the time. 'They have mine and Jill's full and complete support and we are happy for them.'

The texts on Hunter's laptop also show Secundy asked Hunter and her sister for money repeatedly, saying she was left near-penniless after her breakup with her husband.

On August 18, 2016, Secundy wrote to Hunter saying: 'hey.... can you send me more money? sorry to ask. i promise it won't be much longer. Joel took that job. xxoo'

A week later she wrote, 'fuck I don't even have any money for parking. This is a nightmare that I can't wake up from.'

Months later, on April 10, 2017, she sent Hunter another message saying: 'are you able to give me $500?' 

She also messaged Hunter and Hallie in a three-way conversation on April 26, 2017, saying: 'hunt/hallie can you please hire me now .....so i can get my life together and then i will find my own job and unburden both of you.'

Hunter replied to the two of them: 'Hallie it's called leverage.' 

Secundy replied: 'so is that a yes? i hate asking for money everyday. it's the worst feeling.'

Despite the seemingly long-term relationship, it turned out the president's son was unable to remain faithful to either Hallie or her sister.  

In December 2017, he conceived a child with Lunden Roberts, a reported former stripper at a Washington DC club he frequented.

But a year later the confusing tangle continued, as Hunter and Secundy signed a rental agreement together on a $2,200-per-month, three-bed colonial townhouse in Greenville, Delaware, on July 3, 2018, according to documents on the abandoned laptop.

The rental agreement, listing the two as tenants and Patterson-Schwartz & Associates as the landlord's agent, was from August 2018 to July 2019.

The wood-floored home has three bedrooms and three bathrooms and sits on a quiet country road in the small town outside Wilmington.

Emails from the time suggest that when Hunter and Secundy rented the property, his and Hallie's relationship had disintegrated.

On August 2, 2018 Hunter wrote to Hallie telling her 'I need you as a friend Hallie- you can love romantically whomever you want.'

'But I have no friends that I need like I need you. I thought we agreed that we would never part ways and certainly that we would never forbid access to my family, that we would ignore and not speak to one another - that we would never make decisions unilaterally that cause harm,' the email said.

Hallie and Hunter's eventual and final split did not become public until April 2019. Neither of them commented on the story at the time.

'I don't think she'll ever be the same again after Beau passed, but she was definitely better after splitting with Hunter,' the friend told DailyMail.com. 'She definitely parented more, engaged with trying to get the kids straight in school.

'I never saw anything untoward between Hunter and Hallie while Beau was alive,' the friend added. 'She was a much more serious person then, Beau and Hallie were real people then.

'Hunter was always about to burst. He would have blown up whether Beau was alive or not. Hunter was always doing some bad, dumb, stupid stuff.

But Beau wouldn't have tolerated all this other crap, and they all listened to him.'

A month after Hunter's split with Hallie was publicized, he was introduced to South African model Melissa Cohen. He married her six days later.

Though the Bidens may have been hopeful that their black sheep was finally settling down and ending the intrigue around his love life, there was more scandal ahead: on May 28, 2019 Roberts sued Hunter over unpaid child support.

The president's son at first denied he had fathered a baby with the former stripper, until a paternity test revealed the truth.

He also told the Arkansas judge presiding over the case that he did not have enough money to pay child support – despite renting a $12,000 per month home in Hollywood and driving a Porsche Panamera at the time.

After the judge ordered him to produce financial records, he settled the case with Roberts out of court.

Border Patrol agents found more than 83 pounds of cocaine worth over $1 million during a traffic stop on the 5 Freeway just north of San Diego County, officials said Monday. 

Agents also found more than 18 pounds of methamphetamine during a separate traffic stop earlier in the day off the 15 Freeway near the community of Rainbow, plus 3 pounds more at the driver’s home in eastern San Diego County, Border Patrol spokesman Agent Angel Moreno said. 

Most of the methamphetamine in the earlier stop was found Thursday afternoon inside a Mitsubishi Galant when the driver “hastily exited the freeway” after noticing Border Patrol agents patrolling the 15, Moreno said in a statement. 

An agent followed the car off the freeway and pulled it over. “The driver of the vehicle, a 23-year-old male U.S. citizen, exited the vehicle and immediately assumed a hand-cuffing position, placing his hands behind his back,” Moreno said in the news release. “Upon questioning, the driver then freely admitted that he had an unknown quantity of narcotics inside the vehicle.”

A family in Arizona bought a toy worth far more than what they paid for when they discovered more than 5,000 pills believed to be fentanyl inside the doll. 

 

Phoenix police said Saturday the child's parents bought a Glo Worm from a thrift store in El Mirage, Arizona. The parents were cleaning the toy when they found a sandwich bag filled with the drugs, according to police. Police said the family immediately reported their discovery and handed the drugs over to authorities. 

 

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid often mixed with other illicit drugs like heroin and cocaine that causes euphoric-like effects, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 

 

Overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids increased over 16 percent from 2018 to 2019, according to the CDC. Law enforcement officials used the incident as a reminder for parents to inspect all open and used toys.

A former aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday provided new details to back up her claims of sexual harassment — including an allegation that New York’s top elected official kissed her “on the lips” without warning inside his Manhattan office.

Lindsey Boylan — now a Democratic candidate for Manhattan borough president — made the stunning allegation in an essay posted on the Medium website.

Boylan said the incident took place after her 2018 promotion to be Cuomo’s deputy secretary for economic development and special advisor to the governor — a job she initially turned down “because I didn’t want to be near him.”

“We were in his New York City office on Third Avenue,” she wrote.

“As I got up to leave and walk toward an open door, he stepped in front of me and kissed me on the lips. I was in shock, but I kept walking.”

Afterward, Boylan wrote, “I came to work nauseous every day,” then resigned on Sept. 26, 2018.

Boylan also alleges that Cuomo suggested, “Let’s play strip poker,” while they were “flying home from an October 2017 event in Western New York on his taxpayer-funded jet.”

Cuomo made the comment as he and Boylan sat facing each other, with his press aide to her right “and a state trooper behind us,” according to her essay.

“Governor Andrew Cuomo has created a culture within his administration where sexual harassment and bullying is so pervasive that it is not only condoned but expected,” she wrote.

Boylan made her bombshell claims in the wake of The Post’s recent revelation that top Cuomo aide Melissa DeRosa privately admitted his administration hid the total number of nursing home residents killed by COVID-19 from lawmakers and the public over fear that federal prosecutors would use it “against us.”

The Post’s scoop has sparked calls for Cuomo to be impeached and a probe by the FBI and Brooklyn US Attorney’s Office.

In her 1,700-plus-word essay, Boylan said DeRosa and “other top women” around Cuomo “normalized” his alleged harassment so “that only now do I realize how insidious his abuse was.”

Boylan also posted screenshots of government emails, including one in which Cuomo’s executive secretary, Stephanie Benton, purportedly passed along a message from him that referenced a reported former girlfriend to show she was his type.

“He said look up Lisa Shields. You could be sisters. Except you’re the better looking sister,” the Dec. 14, 2016, email said.

Later, Boylan wrote, Cuomo “began calling me ‘Lisa’ in front of colleagues. It was degrading.”

Another image shows a Nov. 1, 2016, email exchange in which Cuomo’s chief of staff, Jill DesRosiers, asked Howard Zemsky — then the state’s economic-development czar — whether Boylan would be attending a meeting the next day.

Zemsky wrote back, “Ha!” and added that Boylan would be in Albany “but it will be hard for her to concentrate on the presentations while worrying about how the Gov’s day is going in Rochester.”

In her essay, Boylan also said that after she first accused Cuomo of sexual harassment in a series of tweets in December, “two women reached out to me with their own experiences.”

“One described how she lived in constant fear, scared of what would happen to her if she rejected the Governor’s advances,” she wrote.

“The other said she was instructed by the Governor to warn staff members who upset him that their jobs could be at risk. Both told me they are too afraid to speak out.”

When she initially accused Cuomo, Boylan didn’t provide any details of his alleged harassment and didn’t respond to repeated requests for comment.

In a tweet Wednesday, she said, “I never planned to share the details of my experience working in the Cuomo administration, but I am doing so now in hopes that it may make it easier for others to speak their own truth.”

Cuomo’s office didn’t immediately return a request for comment, but the governor denied Boylan’s allegations in December.

“It’s not true,” Cuomo said during a news conference a day after her tweets.

“Look, I fought for and I believe a woman has the right to come forward and express her opinion and express issues and concerns that she has. But it’s just not true.”

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — We are hearing for the first time from South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg in his own words about the crash that took the life of Joe Boever in September. Video recordings of interviews Ravnsborg did on two separate dates in September have been posted to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety’s website. In South Dakota, it is extremely rare for these kinds of interviews to be released to the public.

Ravnsborg was driving the car that struck and killed Boever on September 12. On September 14 and September 30, North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation special agents interviewed Ravnsborg. The Hyde County deputy state’s attorney announced last week that she had charged Ravnsborg with three second-class misdemeanors. None of these directly resulted from Ravnsborg’s car hitting Boever. On Tuesday South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem called for Ravnsborg to resign, and a state legislator introduced a resolution including articles of impeachment against Ravnsborg.

“And then quite frankly, wham,” Ravnsborg said. “I hit, the incident happened. I never saw anything ’til the impact. I immediately jump out of the car and call 911 within seconds.”

During the first interview, Jason Ravnsborg told investigators what he remembered from the night of the crash.

“I’m thinking it’s a deer at this point, but I had, I did not see anything. I didn’t have a time to swerve or accelerate or decelerate or anything,” Ravnsborg said. “I didn’t see anything.”

Investigators asked a series of questions.

“Do you normally wear glasses or anything when you’re driving?” an agent said.

“No,” Ravnsborg said.

“Okay. Any, like cheaters or anything?” an agent said.

“No,” Ravnsborg said.

“Okay. We found a pair of broken glasses in your vehicle, but they weren’t sunglasses, they almost look like cheaters of some sort,” an agent said. “There was like a black-framed glass, part of them was laying on the front passenger floorboard, and part of them were laying in the back seat, broke in half. Do you know? I wish I had a picture of them.”

Glasses came up in the second interview 16 days later.

“They’re Joe’s glasses,” an agent said.

“I wondered about that,” Ravnsborg said.

“So that means his face came through your windshield,” an agent said.

“His glasses are right there, Jason. Those are Joe’s …. so the only way for them to get there is through the windshield,” an agent said.

Ravnsborg says he didn’t see the glasses until the agent showed them to him.

“His face was in your windshield, Jason. Think about that,” an agent said.

The attorney general maintained, though, he didn’t see Boever.

“I did not know it was a man until the next day,” Ravnsborg said. “No.”

“You think you had an idea it was something other than a deer, though,” an agent said.

“I just believed it was a deer.” Ravnsborg said. “I do.”

When they arrived at the crash scene the next day, investigators say they found a working flashlight next to Boever’s body which was still on. They told Ravnsborg the light was shining just inches from the road, and they didn’t know how he could have missed it. Ravnsborg repeatedly told investigators he was driving on the road, not the shoulder, and that he didn’t know that he’d hit a man until the next day.

On Tuesday, the private media spokesperson representing Ravnsborg contacted some media in South Dakota while House members discussed the articles of impeachment.

The statement reads:

“The Attorney General does not intend to resign.  At no time has this issue impeded his ability to do the work of the office.  Instead, he has handled some of the largest settlements and legislative issues the state has ever been through.

As an attorney and a Lt. Colonel in the Army Reserves, AG Ravnsborg has fought for the rule of law and personal liberties and would hope that he is afforded the same right and courtesy.”

Teen busted nine times could get sweetheart deal — for graduating high school

An alleged teen gangbanger dubbed “the Peyton Manning of criminal conduct” by a former prosecutor could get a sweetheart deal in court — all because he managed to graduate from high school, The Post has learned.

Courtney Yeates, 18, a reputed member of the Folk Nation street gang, has at least nine busts and four open cases in Queens and Brooklyn — including a felony robbery conviction for which he is awaiting sentencing.

The troubled teen is now back at Riker’s Island on a $150,000 bond after yet another arrest last week, for possession of a loaded handgun.

But one judge is contemplating giving him “Youthful Offender” status — which would reduce his prison time and wipe his record clean, sources with knowledge of the case told The Post.

Yeates is currently awaiting sentencing on two Queens cases after pleading guilty to both on Nov. 18 — a felony robbery case from July 19 and a grand larceny/auto case from July 9, according to court records.

He also has two open cases in which he is charged with possession of a loaded gun — one a Brooklyn bust from May 2019 and his most recent arrest in Queens on Feb. 18.

The judge in his Queens cases, Youth Court Judge Lenora Gerald, is now considering the YO status — citing the teen’s high school graduation as a sign that he can redeem himself, the sources said.

Gerald is seeking to consolidate his cases with the Brooklyn one, sources said. The judge in that case, Youth Court Judge Craig Walker, would have to agree to the move.

But the news isn’t sitting well with some in the Big Apple criminal justice system.

“At his age, and with his record, and this many open cases, he’s the Peyton Manning of criminal conduct,” former Bronx prosecutor Michael Discioarro told The Post. “He’ll be running the show in no time. He’s a top draft pick.”

“What I don’t understand is, with his record, why him?” continued Discioarro, who is now a defense attorney. “I have clients with much less that haven’t gotten this kind of break.”

The state Youthful Offender statute provides judges with the option of giving defendants 19 or younger a break, reducing their potential prison time, and sealing their criminal records.

The law is intended to allow young defendants a chance to turn their lives around — although typically in non-violent or misdemeanor cases.

“In general, courts and legislatures do tend to leave a little wiggle room for judicial interpretation, and of course prosecutors always hate that,” said Jeffrey Butts, head of the Research Evaluation Center at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

“Anytime you’re dealing with someone who is young you need to allow for the possibility that, even at 22, not everyone is a fully functional adult and sometimes they make rash decisions.”

Lucian Chalfen, a spokesman for the state Office of Court Administration, said it was “misguided” to speculate on whether Yeates will be given the status.

“While this defendant does have pending cases, each is decided on its own merits, based on the evidence, facts, and circumstances before the court,” Chalfen said.

But some contend that Yeates, who has been charged with gun possession at least four times, is already a career criminal who poses a danger to the community.

“Getting caught with more than one gun means you carry a gun every day like you carry a cellphone,” one former prosecutor said. “This comes down to who you think should be punished. Two guns, three guns. This is madness.”

“Two gun cases is not a mistake,” he said. “It’s a lifestyle.”

“The number one solution to reduce the shootings that continue to skyrocket across the city is to put offenders in jail,” said Paul DiGiacomo, president of the Detectives Endowment Association. “Judges need to understand just how dangerous the streets have become.”

“After all, it’s their responsibility to keep the public safe,” he said. “Putting people in jail may not be in line with certain politics, but the bottom line is judges need to start worrying about the victim of these violent crimes.”

Queens Defenders, which represents Yeates on his pending court cases, did not respond to calls seeking comment this week.

In an ironic turn of events, the American Conservative Union uninvited an anti-Semitic speaker from its annual Conservative Political Action Conference, which was promoted this year with the theme “America Uncanceled.”

“We have just learned that someone we invited to CPAC has expressed reprehensible views that have no home with our conference or our organization. The individual will not be participating at our conference,” CPAC tweeted on Monday.

The speaker in question, the online commentator Young Pharaoh, has spewed a number of anti-Semitic remarks to his followers, including referring to Jewish people as  “thieving fake Jews,” claiming that “all the censorship & pedophilia on social media is being done by Israeli Jews” and that Judaism is a “complete lie” and “made up for political gain.”

He has also promoted QAnon and Pizzagate conspiracy theories and falsely said media, social media and other big tech companies are “controlled by CCP & Israel through Jewish CEO & corrupt Democrats.”

After learning of his invitation being withdrawn, Young Pharaoh tweeted that the move amounted to “censorship.”

“THIS IS #CENSORSHIP AT ITS BEST! ALL BECAUSE I SAID ‘I DO NOT BELIEVE IN THE VALIDITY OF #JUDAISM AND AM WILLING TO PLACE $50,000 ON MY SELF TO DEBATE THE TOP #JEWISH RABBI,'” he tweeted in all-caps.

The formerly great state of California is in line to pick up about $40 billion dollars if Joe Biden's "give everybody everything" Covid-19 relief package passes as it is currently structured.  The thing is the state itself has already picked up an extra $10 billion in revenue.  They don't exactly broadcast it but the state has done very well for itself during the Covid mess.  Much better than many local governments.  So well the state is shelling out its own $600 per eligible person Covid-19 relief package, just approved this week.

This reality is causing Biden some problems with pimping his own project.  It is hard to justify really dubious deficit spending to kick down money to people who don't really need it.  Not impossible, but hard.  The tax payers and their representatives from Kansas and Nebraska may not want to have their taxes raised so that California and New York can keep pouring money down a rat hole.  

The perils of being in charge.  You have to actually make shit work.

STATE AUDITOR SAYS CA GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSION REDUCTION PROGRAM IS A COMPLETE CLUSTERFUCK

Elaine Howell is the California State Auditor.  I often think that she may be the only honest competent person with real power in the higher levels of state government.  She calls them like she sees them and her eyesight is pretty good.

In an audit released Tuesday Howell asserted that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) does not come anywhere near earning the high praise it gets from it's supporters.  

The Board failed to measure how well it's regulations actually reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  It seems to overstate the results of its emission control programs and bases it's wonderfulness primarily on how many times it sued the Trump administration.

The CARB heavily pimps electric vehicles and hands out incentives for purchase of electric vehicles (which run off the electric grid which in large part requires fossil fuel to generate electricity).

The CARB executive officer, Richard Corey, said the agency agrees with a lot of the auditors findings and is working on reforms.  The agency head, Mary Nichols, just recently retired to take a job with the Biden administration to run the EPA.  She was shot down in flames and never got the job. .

Lee Harvey Oswald was instructed to kill John F. Kennedy by Soviet leader Nikita Kruschev, a former CIA chief has claimed, and went ahead with the plan despite the Soviets changing their mind.

R. James Woolsey, who ran the CIA from 1993-1995, makes the remarkable claim in a new book, Operation Dragon.

Written with Lt. Gen. Ion Mihai Pacepa, a former acting chief of Nicolae Ceausescu's espionage service, the book claims that Oswald, who defected to Russia in 1959 and moved back to the U.S in 1961, was a KGB associate on a mission from Moscow.

Woolsey, 79, and Pacepa, who died of COVID-19 on February 14, aged 92, base their claim on a new interpretation of already-published material.

They cite the 26-volume Warren Commission Report, published in 1964

The President's Commission on the Assassination of President Kennedy, commonly known as the Warren Commission, was chaired by Chief Justice Earl Warren and presented their findings to Lyndon Johnson on September 24, 1964.

They were made public on November 23, 1964, and comprised of testimonies from 550 witnesses, plus supplementary evidence.

Woolsey and Pacepa in their book, out on February 23 but obtained in advance by The New York Post, that so much of the Warren Commission Report was 'codified' that no one understood its significance until now.

'Decoded, these pieces of evidence prove that John F. Kennedy's assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, had a clandestine meeting in Mexico City with his Soviet case officer, Comrade Kostin, who … belongs to the KGB's Thirteenth Department for assassinations abroad,' they claim.

Woolsey and Pacepa, who defected from Romania in 1978, becoming the highest-ranking intelligence official from an enemy country ever granted political asylum in the United States, believe Oswald was recruited in 1957.

At the time, he was a U.S. Marine, serving in Japan.

The authors believe that Oswald worked for the Soviets for several years, including providing the information that allowed them to shoot down American pilot Gary Powers in 1960, before being given his mission to kill Kennedy.

They write that the task, to which he was assigned in 1962, was possibly even handed to Oswald by Khrushchev himself.

'Although Oswald wished to remain in the Soviet Union, he was eventually persuaded to return to the US to assassinate President Kennedy, whom Khrushchev had come to despise,' they write.

'Oswald was … given a Soviet wife and sent back to the US in June 1962.'

Woolsey and Pacepa write that, between that June and April 1963, the Soviets changed their minds.

They called Oswald off, but he was now intent on seeing it through.

'Oswald knew that Nikita Khrushchev, the leader of Oswald's paradise and new home, the Soviet Union, had entrusted him with that task, and he was confident he could pull it off,' the authors write, in the excerpt obtained by the Post.

The authors, according to the Post, provide no proof for their claim.

They do however show Oswald making plans to flee to the USSR after the murder, including a July 1, 1963 letter to the Soviet Embassy asking for separate visas for him and his wife and daughters.

The authors believe this makes it clear that 'Oswald wanted to see his wife and children back in the Soviet Union before assassinating President Kennedy and that he required a separate entry visa for himself to [use] after accomplishing his mission.'

Another letter, dated November 9 of that year, just two weeks before Kennedy's assassination, was written after Oswald returned from a trip to Mexico City, and references a meeting with 'Comrade Kostin,' who the authors identify as 'Valery Kostikov, an identified PGU officer of the Thirteenth Department.'

Oswald was shot and killed on November 24, two days after killing Kennedy.

He was killed by nightclub owner Jack Ruby, while in custody of Dallas police - sparking a myriad of conspiracy theories that will never be fully resolved.

CA DEMOCRAT-SOCIALISTS AGAIN TRYING TO BAN GUN SHOWS

That is part of what makes hard-core liberals successful.  They keep hammering away and they are wiling, even happy, to take small wins.

State Senator Dave Min (D-Irvine) has proposed SB264.  If passed into law it would outlaw gun and ammunition sales on state property and on property controlled by various District Agricultural Associations, which includes 52 of the 58 county fair grounds in the formerly great state of California.  

Min asserts (falsely) that, "The evidence is overwhelmingly clear-more guns lead to more violence."

The pro gun show crowd states, correctly, that the gun shows are a very useful and even necessary source of income for the properties.  Covid has hit these operations particularly hard.  Many, perhaps all, county fairs were cancelled last year and may be cancelled this year.  The Cow Palce earns more than $700,000 per year from guns shows on the property, and those sales generate a further $600,000 in tax revenue.  The Orange County Fair gets $715,000 per year in revenue from gun shows at that location.

It is estimated about 10% of Californians own guns legally.  The current law in CA prohibits undocumented private party transfers of firearms and gun show sellers must have a background check thru the DOJ.
