DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO

Dwayne Ferguson, 52, a good liberal, spent more than a decade advocating for nonviolence and peace in the streets of Buffalo. He has campaigned long and hard for the enactment of the SAFE Act in New York that made carrying a gun on school property a felony. He works in the after-school program at the Henry Austin Elementary School in Buffalo. He is also the president of MAD DADs, the Men Against Destruction Defending Against Drugs and Social Disorder.

Tuesday Ferguson was arrested for two counts of felony possession of a firearm on school grounds. He has a permit for the gun, which makes no difference under the law.

When someone reported a man carrying a gun on the school grounds, a SWAT team responded. After an initial search of the building proved fruitless, the SWAT team began to pat down everyone and that’s how the gun was found on Ferguson.

Ferguson asserts he forgot he was carrying the gun.

Since Ferguson is a good liberal, I expect the DA will cut him some slack, but I could be wrong. Before the passage of the SAFE Act, enacted in the aftermath of Sandy Hook, this would have been a misdemeanor. Not so now.
