NOMINATION FOR MOTHER OF THE YEAR

by Bob Walsh

Jack Garcia, 9, died in June of 2015. The child had lived in California with his mother, Oriana Iris Garcia, 27, but moved to Maryland so she could shack up with Robert Leroy Wilson, 32, who Ms. Garcia had met on line. Wilson had a daughter of his own.

Five days before his death little Jack was handcuffed to a chair by his mother's brother, Jacob Barajas, 25. Jack was accused of eating a piece of birthday cake that Wilson had been saving for his own 2-year old daughter.

Wilson then called Ms. Garcia at her workplace and told her about the alleged theft. Ms. Garcia agreed that Wilson should discipline young Jack. So Wilson beat Jack severely while he was handcuffed to the chair. Jack died five days later in the hospital.

Wilson is now doing 30-life. Barajas pleaded guilty to child abuse and is awaiting sentencing. He regularly beat Jack, who was not enrolled in school and spent pretty much all his time at the apartment, apparently being abused.

Ms. Garcia sent away an ambulance that had been summoned by her brother. She then sat around, watched cat videos and played video games while her son's condition worsened. Ms. Garcia just pleaded guilty to child abuse charges.
