BITING THE HAND THAT FEEDS YOU

by Bob Walsh

Louise Hermida, 75, and her 39-year old autistic son, both of Queens, N.Y., adopted a shelter dog about six years ago when it was a youngster. A mastiff. Early Monday the dog attacked Ms. Hermeida and her son leaving the woman dead and the son hospitalized.

The dog had recently been exhibiting aggressive behavior towards other dogs. About ten days ago it chewed up a small terrier and injured its owner while being walked.

Ms. Hermida had apparently intended to take the dog back to the shelter on Monday. Perhaps the dog somehow knew that, and didn't want to go. The dog is now in the custody of animal control.

There is roughly one fatal dog attack per week in the United States.

How sad. I owned a Mastiff for several years. They are a stubborn breed but are usually loving and seek affection from people.
