PRISONERS SUE OVER RIOT INJURIES

by Bob Walsh

Two guests of the people of South Caroline are suing the state, alleging that the state was negligent in failing to maintain an adequate staffing level at the Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, S.C.

The suits, filed Tuesday in Lee County, assert that the crappy staffing level was a conscious failure on the part of the state. One of the prisoners, Jadarius Roberts, was stabbed more than 20 times during the riot .

That suit alleges, among other things, that many and possibly most of the doors at the prison were nonfunctional, allowing inmates to roam the facility pretty much at will.

The state has declined comment.
