Knight used to be the Chief of Staff to Minneapolis Chief of Police
Medaria Arradondo. He is now back to his permanent civil service rank
of Lieutenant due to a comment he made to the local fish wrapper, the
Star Tribune.
He used the
term "White Boys" in speaking to the paper concerning lack of police
diversity and minority recruitment efforts. His comment created a
significant backlash from the rank-and-file officers.
Knight said he stood by his statement, but was sorry if his use of the phrase offended anybody.
The
comments touched on the elimination of the department's Community
Service Officer program due to budget cuts. This program, which the
city hopes to reinstate when the plague is over, created a pipeline for
applicants who were getting their law enforcement degree while getting
their feet wet within the department.
Knight's backers assert that his demotion is rooted in "White fragility."
