SHRINKAGE

By Bob Walsh

Covid saw shoplifting incidents down, but value up

Shrinkage is a term retails apply to vanishing retail product, i. e. theft of merchandise.  I caught a blurb on a news channel a day or two ago that stated that retail shrinkage is now right at 7% of gross sales.  That is a LOT and should go a long way towards telling you why some large retails are bailing out of areas where it is just no longer possible to operate stores at a profit.

I read where Family Dollar and Dollar General are closing stores in certain areas. It's sad, because they are primarily lower income neighborhood stores. People walk to them to shop and they are usually staffed by folks that live nearby.
