Deputies shoot suspect who pointed gun at them while drinking, Harris County Pct. 1 says
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Deputies shot and injured a 47-year-old man after they received reports of a man drinking and firing a gun into the air early Sunday morning, according to the Harris County Pct. 1 Constable's Office.
This happened at a home on Basil Point Court, which is in a neighborhood off TC Jester Boulevard near Fallbrook Drive, around 1:30 a.m.
The constable's office said the man's wife had called 911 after 47-year-old Hector Reyes came home drunk and started firing a gun into the air in their backyard. The wife let deputies into the home to search for the man and they found him on the back porch with a gun in his hand.
When they opened the back door, Pct. 1 said Reyes pointed the gun at the deputies and may have opened fire. That's when the deputies shot the man in the abdomen.
After Reyes was shot, Pct. 1 said he tried to run off and jumped a fence into a neighbor's yard before he was detained.
A neighbor said they heard the gunshots.
"It was like three times that we heard it," said neighbor Danila Garcia. "Just pow, pow, pow."
Deputies provided first aid until an ambulance took Reyes to a hospital where his condition was reportedly stable.
Reyes faces a charge of aggravated assault of a peace officer, a first-degree felony.
The man's wife told KHOU 11's Michelle Choi that the two are in the process of separating and hadn't spoken in months. She believed he got the gun recently to intimidate the family. She said when he came home drunk, she feared for her daughter, herself and for her neighbors.
Another neighbor, who didn't want to be identified, said they found evidence of gunshots in his fence and walls.
The deputies were not hurt and will be placed on administrative leave while an investigation is underway. The Harris County Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting along with the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
"Please, if you're drinking, do not handle weapons at the same time," Pct. 1 Assistant Chief Lofton Harrison said at the scene.
