President
Trump has decided that, since they cost about 3-4 cents each to make,
the mint will no longer crank out 1 cent pieces. (Technically they are
NOT pennies.) The copper alloy blanks that are on hand will be used up
and then that will be that.
There
have been at least two serious attempts to do this over the years that I
remember. Both times the Illinois congressional delegation killed the
idea. I am guessing it will actually happen this time around.
