Ivanka Trump has spoken out about the threat of automation, calling on the private sector to take the lead in investing in training for workers to prevent layoffs.

Trump, the daughter of and senior advisor to President Donald Trump, made the remarks in an interview for Next Revolution with Steve Hilton set to air Sunday on Fox News.

In the interview, Ivanka Trump addressed the looming threat of automation, which some studies predict will wipe out millions of U.S. jobs in the coming years.

‘The answers often reside in the private sector, so how do we align our goals and theirs,’ Trump said. ‘We want to celebrate the employers who are choosing not to lay off and rehire, but who are choosing to reskill and retrain, and reinvest in their workforce.’

Trump spoke with Hilton in a Toyota facility, and praised the company for a July pledge to create 200,000 U.S. training opportunities over the next five years through increased apprenticeships, work-based learning and on-the-job training.

However, she said that the way to answer the threat to jobs was not to stifle technology advances that might eliminate jobs.

‘History has not been kind to governments or individuals who have tried to halt innovation,’ Trump said.

‘We want to celebrate innovation. We want this country to be the place where people are able to innovate and create best in class new ideas.

‘We created the light bulb. We sent men to the moon — and hopefully, soon, women. We are proud of our heritage as entrepreneurs and innovators, and we will encourage that,’ she continued.

Trump acknowledged that there are difficulties ahead for America’s workers, though.

‘With that said, there will be disruption. And our role in government is to anticipate that disruption, and to the extent we need to work and encourage the private sector to help make us aware of where it’s going to happen.

‘They are the ones who are doing the innovation. They are the ones who are innovating,’ she said.

‘So, they have to work with us and share with us this is what’s coming done the bend, and this is how we’re going to ensure that those who are at risk of losing their job and being displaced are able to secure the skills they need to benefit from increased productivity from less physical work,’ Trump added.
