There was an interesting special
election in San Mateo County, CA. Tuesday. There was only one item
on the ballot, Measure A. If passed it would grant the county Board of
Supervisors the power to throw out the elected County Sheriff if the
board voted by at least 80% to do so. The measure passed by about 86%
to about 14%. This authority would be temporary and would evaporate at
the end of 2028.
Regular
readers will remember I have written several times about Sheriff
Christina Corpus. She has dismissed an investigation into her conduct
and refused to step down despite requests from the board and several of
the cities within the county. Former Judge LaDoris Cordell conducted an
investigation into the Sheriff's activities and found significant fault
with her, including a very high-paying job handed to her boyfriend.
The
county has until April 3 to finish the official vote count. The Board
of Supervisors could then act, assuming they choose to do so and of
course assuming the issue passes, which looks like pretty much a sure
thing at this point.
