Quick-thinking firefighters in Washington State saved the lives of six 10-week-old puppies after they were exposed to a suspected opioid overdose and brought to a fire station unresponsive.
According to a statement from Sky Valley Fire Department, three puppies were carried into Station 54 earlier this week in critical condition, suffering from respiratory failure and cardiac arrest.
Firefighter-EMTs immediately began lifesaving measures, including CPR, oxygen therapy, and the administration of naloxone, also known as Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses.
Because all three puppies were showing the same severe symptoms, firefighters suspected an environmental poisoning rather than illness.
Officials said opioid exposure was considered the most likely cause, noting that substances such as fentanyl can be extremely dangerous if inhaled, especially for small animals.
As crews worked to revive the puppies, the officer in charge requested assistance from the sheriff’s office.
All three puppies responded to treatment and were successfully resuscitated.
But the rescue effort did not end there.

Sheriff’s deputies later located the individuals who had brought the puppies to the fire station and went to their residence, where they found three additional puppies in serious distress.
Deputies rushed them to Station 54, where firefighter-EMTs again provided emergency care.
All six puppies were then transported to a 24-hour urgent care veterinary clinic for further treatment.
Veterinarians later confirmed that all six puppies are recovering well and are expected to survive.

Officials said opioid exposure was the leading suspected cause of the puppies' condition
A video shared by the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office showed the firefighters later playing gently with the puppies after they were revived.
The tiny dogs can be seen wagging their tails and climbing over their rescuers as crews smile and laugh.
Officials said they hope the puppies will make a full recovery and eventually find loving forever homes.
