KENTUCKY REP. THOMAS MASSIE: 'THIS IS NOT WHAT WE VOTED FOR'

 By Howie Katz

Republican Thomas Massie represents Kentucky's fourth district in the U.S. House of Representatives.

As can be expected, congressional Democrats led by Sen. Chuck Schumer and Rep.Hakeem Jeffries were quick to condemn Trump's attack on Venezuela and the capture of Nicolas Maduro. While most Republican members of congress praised the attack, there were some who condemned it.

“Wake up MAGA. VENEZUELA is not about drugs; it’s about OIL and REGIME CHANGE. This is not what we voted for,” Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky) wrote on X.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky) said “Time will tell if regime change in Venezuela is successful without significant monetary or human cost. Best though, not to forget, that our founders limited the executive’s power to go to war without Congressional authorization for a reason — to limit the horror of war and limit war to acts of defense.”

MTG said “If U.S. military action and regime change in Venezuela was really about saving American lies from deadly drugs, then why hasn’t the Trump admin taken action against Mexican cartels? And if prosecuting narco terrorists is a high priority, then why did President Trump pardon the former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who was convicted and sentenced for 45 years for trafficking hundreds of tons of cocaine into America? ... The next obvious observation is that by removing Maduro this is a clear move for control over Venezuelan oil supplies that will ensure stability for the next obvious regime change war in Iran. And of course, why is it ok for America to militarily invade, bomb, and arrest a foreign leader, but Russia is evil for invading Ukraine and China is bad for aggression against Taiwan? Is it only ok if we do it? (I’m not endorsing Russia or China).”

While I'm not condemning Trump's attack on Venezuela, I've always maintained that his conflict with that country was about toppling Maduro and not about drugs. I think Rep. Massie was spot on when he said “Venezuela is not about drugs; it’s about oil and regime change.”
