I confess that I do not particularly like children. I do not dislike them, but I do not think they are the nicest thing since sliced bread. I especially do not like traveling with them as they are often fussy and irritating.
For those reasons I can understand what Joe Rickey Hundley, 60, of Hayden, Idaho, was feeling. I do, however, have zero sympathy for his actions.
On February 8 he was on an airplane. He was sitting next to Jessica Bennett, 33, as their plane began its descent. Her 19-month old started to cry. Hundley, who allegedly smelled of booze, was allegedly drinking much of the flight and was believed to have been drunk, objected to the baby riding on his mother’s lap next to him. When the baby started fussing he said to her, “Shut that nigger baby up.” and slapped the child across the face, causing a scratch on the baby’s face and of course causing it to screech even louder.
Hundley is now facing federal charges of assault for the incident. He used to work for AGC Aerospace and Defense, Composites Group. He doesn’t any more. The company declined to say if he resigned or was canned.
EDITOR’S NOTE: The parents are white. They adopted the boy who is black. Look for a big lawsuit because the mother told Twin Cities television stations that the incident has caused her family a great deal of trauma and that her son had been outgoing but had turned apprehensive of strangers.
