A Bismarck oral surgeon who was temporarily suspended from practicing died from an overdose Monday night in her north Bismarck home.

Dr. Mansureh Iravani, 50, was a dentist and doctor in solo practice at the Oral Surgery Center of Bismarck. A witness found her and called the Burleigh County Sheriff's Department at about 6:30 p.m. Monday, according to Lt. Tracy Nelson. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid considerably more powerful and deadly than heroin, was found inside the residence.

Nelson said Metro Area Ambulance Services attempted to revive Iravani using Narcan, a drug that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose, but it didn't work. She was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.

Nelson said an autopsy has been completed, but a toxicology report identifying the drug Iravani overdosed on could take several weeks. Her death remains under investigation.

Iravani had closed her practice in March after the North Dakota Board of Medical Examiners temporarily suspended her license. Iravani had been accused of pulling wrong teeth, starting procedures without enough sedation and yanking surgical stitches from a patient's mouth. Iravani denied the allegations, which she said had been made by former disgruntled employees. A hearing on the matter was pending.

Bonnie Johnson, a friend of Iravani's, remembers Iravani as as being caring, "zany" and having an "upbeat personality."

"She was always giving," said Johnson, who met Iravani three years ago at a local yoga class. "Always wanting to help — especially others."

Iravani, who is originally from Florida, graduated with a doctor of dental surgery degree from the University of Florida in 1992, according to a family obituary posted online. She later received her doctor of dental medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, in Cleveland in 1997. Iravani practiced oral surgery for 20 years, including 13 years in Bismarck.

A gathering for Iravani will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Parkway Funeral Service in Bismarck. Johnson said a concert featuring Iravani's favorite music and supporting Furry Friends Rocking Rescue, Iravani's other passion, will be held from 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Post in Mandan.

I hate Dentists. All of them. Everyone Dentist I ever visited lied to me. "This will only be uncomfortable for a moment." Three days later you are literally holding your jaw in your hands and moaning "Fuck that Dentist." as you wash down another pain pill.
