THOMAS FIRE

by Bob Walsh

The huge Thomas Fire, now the largest ever since records have been kept in the formerly great state of California, is now officially 100% contained, though not yet fully extinguished. That will probably be another several days. The area denuded by the fire is the source of several of the massive mud slides that have killed a number of people in SoCal. This one was really, really nasty and will continue to offer problems, via mud slides and uncontrolled runoff, for some time to come.

Who issues permits to build in areas prone to fire and mudslides?

CA is weird about that. Especially if you have money. That being said just recently fire insurance companies are refusing to renew old policies or issue new ones for homes in high fire risk areas so unless you can afford to pay cash and carry the risk yourself a large chunk of this may self-correct in a few years. Maybe. With a tail wind.
