POLITICS ..... LOCAL, PETTY AND NASTY

by Bob Walsh

There is a substantial hoorah brewing in beautiful downtown Stockton. The city owns a couple of pretty decent golf courses that are habitual money loosers. The local golfers and the non-golfers who live right next to the courses like them. They are pretty and enhance property values. The Stockton mayor seems to be intent on shutting them down, or at least the Swenson course, and turning it into low-rent housing. The locals don't like it but most of them actually live in the county, not the city. They can't vote in city elections, so the mayor does not give a rat's ass about their opinions.

There has been a substantial public outcry over the mayor's plan. It has coalesced into a SAVE SWENSON campaign. There is also a simultaneous but unrelated (probably) attempt to recall Mayor Tubbs over supposed fiscal incompetence and shenanigans.

A whole raft of SAVE SWENSON STOP MAYOR TUBBS lawn signs have cropped up all over the city, including areas where people actually live in the city limits and can vote. Strangely, these lawn signs are disappearing at an alarming rate. Strangely this isn't happening mostly in the middle of the night. The thieves have been observed and even photographed, including the plate on their Jeep Cherokee. One might almost think the thieves are confident they are protected and nothing bad will happen to them. Strangely, the signs that say only SAVE SWENSON with no mention of Mayor Tubbs are left undisturbed.

Thus far the Sheriff's Office, which is investigating as most of the thefts have taken place in county islands within the city, has been unable to comment yet, though the case is still young.
