INTERESTING STATISTIC

by Bob Walsh

By law the Cal DOJ is required to issue a yearly report on gunshot deaths by police in the state. The report is purely statistical, not commenting on legality or justification.

During calendar year 2017 various police agencies killed 172 civilians and 2 police officers with gunfire. This was the result of somewhat more than 700 incidents.

In the previous year 157 civilians and five police officers.

As far as I know none of these cop-on-cop deaths was deliberate, rather they were accidental friendly fire. Excrement occurs. I vaguely recall a deliberate situation some years back when an on-duty in-uniform officer was the subject of an attempted arrest and he chose to shoot it out rather than go to prison. It certainly was not within the last two years and my recollection of the situation is fuzzy.
