AT LEAST THEY ARE FOCUSING ON SOME OF THE IMPORTANT STUFF

by Bob Walsh

Yes, like the legal hassle from years ago about whether or not Hunting Beach, CA. is the "official" Surf City (it is) there is now law in CA designating a legal "appellation of origin" to weed.

The technical term, borrowed from the wine industry, is "terroir" (pronounced tehr-waar).  It means a combination of factors including soil, climate and sunlight that gives wine grapes their distinctive character.  It now applies to what we used to call Humbolt County Holy Weed.

This is seen as a way for relatively small marijuana farms to keep a foothold in the industry.  They can present themselves as grown in soil, without artificial sunlight and without chemicals, making a sustainable, low environmental impact, high quality product.

So, in order to call your product Humbolt County Cannabis it must be grown in the dirt in Humbolt County (as opposed to hydroponic tanks) under natural sunlight in the open air.

Due to the heavy regulation and taxation of legal weed there is still a HUGE market for bootleg weed in CA.  Legal weed must be tested for THC content and  contaminants and there are significant taxes on the legal product.

Last time I checked (1966) your local dope slinger did not collect sales tax and was not paying excise tax.
