Today the State Department issued a "get the fuck out of here" notice to
American citizens in Hati. It seems that murder, kidnapping, rape and
kidnap for ransom of non-locals, especially Americans, has of late
become rampant. The Level 4 warning is a directive (unenforceable) to
U. S. citizens to get out and a travel advisory-restriction to Americans
to not travel to Hati. The current situation there is such that the
embassy has virtually zero ability to provide protection of basic
services to Americans.

25 years ago, my son was sent to Haiti on a multi-nation effort to stabilize the region and train local police and military. I have a photo album of his exploits. The language spoken is Creole and nobody else in the world speaks it. It was so bad back then that dead bodies littered the streets and trash was thrown in the river at Port Au Prince in hopes of a strong tide to pull it out to sea. It is a wasteland of disease, gangs, crime and corruption. It's now a stop off point for modern day Pirates and drug and weapon smugglers. You would be killed for your clothes.
