ON STRIKE...SHUT IT DOWN

By Bob Walsh

Stockton employees from the Operations and Maintenance and Trades and Maintenance units walk a picket line outside of City Hall on Nov. 28, 2023, after going on strike for 72 hours over what they allege as unfair labor practices by the city.

A three-day strike among many of the civil service employees of the crime-ridden and gang infested metropolis of Stockton is under way.  The strikers include various operations, trades and maintenance people that operate, among other things, the water and sewage plants.  These workers are alleging unfair labor practices by the city, who have been without a contract for five months.

The workers want more money, pointing out (accurately) that they took it in the shorts more than ten years ago when the city went bankrupt.

The city reached a tentative agreement with these groups in August, but the rank-and-file declined to ratify the agreement.

A three day strike is clearly not intended to shut the city down but to focus attention on the situation and show the city that the strikers are serious in what they want.
