Of the shoppers standing in line so eager to get their hands on those $175 Air Jordans, how many do you suppose are from families on welfare?

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Police were called Wednesday to Arden Fair Mall in Sacramento to disperse a rowdy crowd that turned out to buy new Nike Air Jordan sneakers.

More than 1,000 shoppers showed up in hopes of buying a pair of the $175 kicks during a midnight release. Each person in line had a numbered tag to allow for an orderly procession.

But at about 11:45 p.m., a group of people from the back of the pack walked past those in line and headed straight for the doors. It didn't go well with those who'd been waiting up to 10 hours.

Things quickly got out of hand, leading mall security to call city police for help in dispersing the unruly crowd that surged toward the doors.

Well, it wasn't overly unruly, but there was a potential for it to go south. So it was the decision to shut it down and wait for another day," said Steve Reed, chief of Arden Fair security.

"There was a SWAT team, fighting, helicopters," shopper Ashley Merriman said. "It was insane."

There were no arrests made during the melee at the mall. No injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, a handful of lucky buyers got their hands on some Jordans at Sunrise Mall when the shoes went on sale at about 6:30 a.m.

Other shoppers seeking the shoes were waiting in line early Wednesday outside of the Foot Locker store at Downtown Plaza in Sacramento.
