A PRIVATE HELL

Trey Rusk is a retired state police lieutenant now working with an auto theft task force. Here are his comments on the shooting of 15-year-old Jaime Gonzales by two Brownsville, Texas cops:

I guess a lot of people have forgotten the Columbine School shooting. The officers in Brownsville who responded to the 15 year old with a gun acted correctly.

The carnage would have been terrible had the 15 year old started shooting other students with what was perceived as being a Glock handgun.

These officers will never get over this shooting. We should thank them for doing their job because their lives will be changed forever. I hope the police department is getting them much needed counseling.

Brownsville is not that big a place. The cops involved in the shooting will be forever known as ‘the cops that shot that kid in school.’ The whispers and looks are bound to impact them and their families.

Historically, police officers have been plagued with alcoholism, divorce, depression and suicide. So, try to put yourself in their place. The public scrutiny is just beginning, but the private hell will go on forever.
