SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT TONIGHT’S REPUBLICAN DEBATE

Here are my thoughts about tonight’s Republican debate.

CNN deserves kudos for managing the debate so much better than any of the previous debacles.

It was gratifying to see that none of the four candidates sniped at each other with degrading personal attacks.

Donald Trump answered questions by talking in generalities, that is if he even answered the questions.

Gov. Kasich, as usual, kept emphasizing his accomplishments in Congress and as Governor of Ohio.

Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz were the most specific when answering questions on various policies.

As someone with a special interest in Israel, I especially liked Rubio’s take on negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians. While Trump said he wants to bring about a deal with the two adversaries, Rubio made it crystal clear that Israel cannot negotiate with the Palestinians because all they really want is to destroy the Jewish state.

Rubio was exactly right, while Trump seems to be clueless concerning the intent of the Palestinians to obliterate Israel.

In my opinion, Rubio and Cruz were the real winners tonight by a large margin, Trump didn’t hurt himself and Kasich will probably win Ohio.

I have come to the conclusion that Kasich is (now) actually running for VP. He may very well succeed. He would be a good man for the job. If Rubio loses in FLA next week he will be toast. He is probably toast anyway. The real dog fight will now IMHO be between Cruz and Trump. It will be amusing to watch to see which one of them the Republican power structure hates the least. My guess is that is Trump. Cruz is a true believer, Trump is not. The power structure will believe they can deal with Trump if push comes to shove. Cruz, not so much. Of course there are still those who believe that the RNC will manage to knock off both Trump and Cruz and slip in a more malleable candidate at the convention. That would be real fun to watch.
