POSSIBLY MAJOR WHOOPS AT OAKLAND PD

By Bob Walsh

There was a major whoops (?) back in October of 2014 at the Oakland, CA police department. Oakland has been using body cameras for quite some time and at that time their system was upgraded. When the upgrade was done the tech allegedly forgot to check the box SAVE EVERYTHING and instead the system only saved things that were specifically indicated to save long--term. This resulted in about 25% of the videos going bye-bye.

This little detail came to lite in a recent murder case where the video was fortunately only a very minor part of the case.

Videos that were to be used as court evidence or that were possibly going to be used in major cases were specifically indicated to be saved and so were in fact preserved.

Probably I am just being paranoid and maybe I read too many detective stories but I can't help but think that if I wanted to hide one disappearing video, a good place to hide it would be in a group of hundred and hundred and hundreds of disappearing video clips. But maybe that's just me.

Cost may be a factor in why so many videos are not kept.
