N.C. ESCAPE ATTEMPT KILLS TWO STAFF MEMBERS

by Bob Walsh

Four prisoners attempted to escape from the Pasquotank Correctional Center in Elizabeth City, N.C. around noon on Thursday. They set a fire in the sewing plant as a distraction and then ran for the fences. It appears the four attacked staff with improvised stabbing weapons while en route to the fence.

Correctional Officer Justin Smith was assigned to the sewing plant. Veronica Darden was a supervisor in that shop, teaching inmates how to sew up safety vests and similar items. She had been a "guard" before taking the job with Correctional Enterprises. Both died. Correctional Officer Wendy Shannon and mechanic Geoffrey Howe were seriously hurt.

None of the 725 prisoners at the facility escaped, though one made it to the fence, got caught in the wire and surrendered.

The state employees union has complained regularly of late about short staffing at state prison facilities.

Elizabeth City is a shithole. Everyone wants to put people in prison but nobody wants to pay correctional officers a living wage.

Funny. Read the title and thought it was going to be about Jenner.
