A VERY SHORT-LIVED SECESSION

by Bob Walsh

The regional government in Catalonia, a principle region of Spain, has pissed off the central government. An election was held there a couple of weeks ago to maybe-possibly establish a secession from the central government. On Thursday the Catalan parliament voted a unilateral declaration of independence. On Friday the Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, sacked the head of the regional police force in Catalonia as well as the Director General of their police. He also dismissed the cabinet and president of the regional government in Catalonia and called for new elections in the region. In the meantime the P.M. appointed his own deputy, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, to take charge of the regional government.

It will be interesting to see what happens in government offices on Monday. It is unknown what the civil service and the members of the "old" parliament will do.

Catalonia is one of the wealthiest regions of Spain and is tired of subsidizing the rest of the country. About 90% of those voting voted to secede, but only 43% of the electorate actually cast ballots. There was significant interference with the election in many areas.
