The wild fires in NorCal have now claimed over 30 lives and there are a couple of hundred people missing. That could be mostly a communication problem. There are about 80,000 people displaced and about 5,200 buildings destroyed, most of them family homes.
People have come in from other states to help fight the fires and they are dropping record amount of fire retardant. The fire has been moving very, very fast. A couple of nights ago one couple couldn't get away so they went to the neighbor's house and hid out in their swimming pool for several hours until the fire burned thru the area. The high winds from Friday night into Saturday morning didn't help.
The phrase "unprecedented disaster" might not be 100% accurate (yet) but is not wildly out of place either.
