PRISON FOR FAKE NEWS...IN CAMEROON

by Bob Walsh

All is not warm and fuzzy in the country of Cameroon. There is a substantial chunk of English-speaking separatists who are giving the French-speaking government some grief. It is in fact completely possible an outright civil war is in the making. This situation was stirred up recently by the murder of an American missionary and his family in that country. They had been there 12 days.

A journalist, Mimi Mefo Takambou, was trying to find out who murdered them. She works for Equinox TV there in Cameroon. She concluded that the family was murdered by members of the military. She said so. She was then arrested for spreading "fake news."

It is illegal in Cameroon to present news without being in a position to prove the news is true, or that the person presenting it had good reason to believe that the report was true.

There are currently about 300 American military in Cameroon, assisting in the fight against Boko Haram. The government does not want to get on the bad side of the U.S. as this support is very important, maybe even vital, to them.
