DR FRANKENSTEIN’S MONSTER

In the book and in the Boris Karloff movies, Frankenstein always called his creation ‘Creature’ and never ‘monster’. However, in the movies his wife did use the word ‘monster’

I am sure most of you know about Mary Shelley’s 1823 novel “Frankenstein” but are more familiar with the movies made based on the book. Except for the creation of the monster, those movies bear little resemblance to the book in which there is no mention of Igor, Frankenstein’s trusted grave-robbing aide in some of the movies.

There were more than 60 movies made about Frankenstein’s monster, including some cartoons and comedies, the most notable of which was the 1974 film “Young Frankenstein” starring Gene Wilder as Dr. Frankenstein, Peter Boyle as the Monster and Marty Feldman as Igor.

The best-known movie and the best of the lot was the 1931 film “Frankenstein” starring Boris Karloff as the monster. There was no Igor in that film either. Fritz was the name of Dr. Frankenstein’s aide. The film ended with the presumed death of the monster and Frankenstein’s marriage to his beloved Elizabeth.

“Bride of Frankenstein” followed in 1935, again starring Boris Karloff as the monster. Still no Igor. Then in 1939 came “Son of Frankenstein” with Boris Karloff again and finally Ygor, a hunchback played by famed horror movie actor Bela Lugosi.

In the book and in the Boris Karloff movies, Frankenstein always referred to his creation as the ‘creature’ and never as the ‘monster’. However, in the movies his wife Elisabeth did use the word ‘monster’.

Meticulous research recently completed by the prestigious Berkley Society of Book and Film Studies revealed that when Elizabeth was mentioning Dr. Frankenstein’s monster, she was not referring to the creature created by her husband. Elizabeth’s monster was the 13-inch long dick of her husband.
