SHOULD VIOLENT ASSHOLES HAVE ACCESS TO GUNS ?

By Bob Walsh

domestic violence, guns

U.S. v. Rahimi was heard earlier this week at SCOTUS.  The question is should "the authorities" be able to take guns away from violent assholes, i.e. persons on the wrong end of domestic violence restraining orders.

Interestingly enough pretty much everybody agrees that the basic answer is YES.  The trouble is WHEN.  A significant number of interested parties want the thing to wait until the (alleged) bad actor is actually convicted of something.  A lot of people (many of them just gun haters but others who are not) want it to kick in anytime anybody says THAT PERSON MAY HURT ME, TAKE HIS/HER GUNS AWAY.

This case could have widespread fallout beyond the immediate question.  Dopers (like Hunter Biden) are also prohibited from owning firearms even though many have never been convicted of anything (like Hunter Biden).  As are people who have been adjudicated to be mentally ill.

A decision should be made next year.   Hopefully that decision will actually be helpful, logical and reasonable.  Don't count on any of that.
