I saw the clip of that
helicopter crash yesterday. That thing was falling straight down,
upside down, from about 400 feet with no tail and no main rotor. Right
now they suspect the tail section suffered a structural failure of some
sort and the tail section took out the main rotor. When that happens
you are pretty well fucked. Had they been lower those on board might
have survived the initial impact and been able to get out. That must
have been scary as hell for those poor people on board that thing. That
is one of the things I don't like about flying. If something turns to
shit it will probably be really bad and your ability to mitigate it will
be really, really minimal. I realize that flying is statistically
pretty safe, but still it makes me uneasy.
