A massive explosion rocked Yolo County of California.
Inveterate
news consumers will be aware of a major fireworks explosion along
County Road 23 in Yolo County, CA on Tuesday. It blew up a warehouse
and maybe-probably blew up seven employees. That is where the lawyers
and CalOSHA come in.
The
warehouse was occupied by Devastating Pyrotechnics and BlackStar
Fireworks. Devastating Pyrotechnics is owned by a Lieutenant with the
Yolo County Sheriff's Office. He also owns the building. BlackStar
Fireworks is owned by a Yolo County volunteer firefighter who is also an
employee of Devastating Pyrotechnics. The Esparto Fire Protection
District was aware of the use the building was being put to. The people
involved are apparently holders of the proper licenses however the
building itself is zoned for agriculture. There is no conditional use
permit on file that would permit the manufacture or storage of
explosives there.
In
addition according to various media outlets two of the employees there
were on their first day on the job. I can't help but wonder if their
orientation was lacking or if maybe the Material Safety Data Sheets were
not reviewed by the new employees. My training in OSHA regulations
(now stale I admit) leads me to believe that there could possibly be
some criminal liability somewhere if the employer can not clearly
demonstrate all that safety paperwork was taken care of properly.
This is a very bad scene all around.

I bought some Black Cats and Sparklers this year for the Grandkids. The guy who sold them to me was missing a finger.
