CHICAGO — A Little Village man has the dubious distinction of being the first person to steal a Chicago Police Department pod camera, officials said.

The evidence the police needed to bust him was captured on the same pole-mounted camera.

Geo Martinez, 19, of the 2400 block of Spaulding, was charged Sunday with felony theft and misdemeanor reckless conduct, police said. He was ordered held on $40,000 bond Monday.

Police realized the camera was stolen on Nov. 18 when they were dispatched to check on an apparently broken one outside 3258 W. 23rd St. They checked archived video footage sent from the missing camera and spotted a man stealing it on Nov. 8, police said.

Later, during a gang disturbance, police recognized Martinez from the video and arrested him, police said. City officials said they believe it's the first time anyone has stolen a pod camera, valued at about $8,000.
