FUN AND GAMES AT A KOOKFORNIA WAKE

Bob Walsh notes that it was one hell of a funeral. To me it seems more like one of those Mexican weddings.

VALLEJO, Calif. -- A funeral wake turned into a bloody "scene of pandemonium" Monday afternoon, ending with a 36-year-old Oakland man being flown to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

Vallejo police were called out to an altercation at Rodgers and Cunningham streets at about 4 p.m., Vallejo Sgt. Jeff Bassett said.

When police arrived, some 30 people were gathered and arguing in the street near a residence where a wake was being held, Bassett said.

Police reportedly saw a woman missing some of her clothes and the Oakland man, lying bloody and without his pants, Bassett said. The woman had reportedly gotten into an altercation with another woman, at which time her clothes were torn off. The male victim reportedly tried to intervene before being hit in the head with a rock, according to police reports.

While others were trying to help him up, a man driving a gold-colored sedan ran over his lower body and legs, witnesses told police. The driver left the scene.

The man's pants were removed in an effort to determine his injuries, Bassett said.

Several witnesses were reportedly uncooperative with police questioning, but information on a possible suspect is being pursued, Bassett said.

Although the victim's condition was serious enough for him to be airlifted to John Muir, no condition was available for the man Tuesday.
