IF YOU PLAN TO ROB PEOPLE, MAKE SURE THE VICTIMS ARE NOT COPS

The deceased was either one of the dumbest crooks that night or one of the unluckiest.

An armed guy with a bandana over his face picked the worst three people to try to rob last night: three undercover Houston cops.

The officers were in the back parking lot of a Luby's Cafeteria on the Gulf Freeway about 11 p.m. last night discussing an operation when they were approached by the man, police say.

When the robber pulled out his gun and demanded money, HPD says two of the cops, "fearing for their safety, discharged their duty weapons and exchanged gunfire with the suspect."

It doesn't appear to have been a fair gunfight -- none of the officers were hit. The robber, whose identity has not been released pending verification, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two officers who fired their weapons are Sergeant L. Bronikowski, a 29-year vet, and Officer C. Cayton, a ten-year vet. The HPD Internal Affairs division, the Harris County DA's office and the homicide department will investigate the shooting.

Fairly radical but effective thinning out of the shallow end of the gene pool.
