IT FEELS RIGHT, BUT IS ACTUALLY SORT OF DUMB

This is one of those tragic stories about a couple of people doing what they maybe felt at the time was the right thing, but on reflection was definitely not. It got one of them killed, badly hurt the other, and endangered a lot of innocent people.

About ten days ago a couple of guys stole a Honda from in front of a private residence in San Leandro. Shortly after the theft the owner and his buddy learned about the theft and hopped in their minivan to pursue. They did. They found the stolen Honda and a Jeep that was used to facilitate the theft and pursued them, up onto the Nifty Nimitz. They crashed. The driver of the minivan died. His passenger, the owner of the Honda, was badly injured. The suspected car thief got away.

If you don’t have lights and sirens and are not trained for this sort of thing you should not be pursuing bad guys on public roads. Had they injured or killed an innocent, uninvolved person the good guys would be the ones facing criminal and civil liability here. Call the cops. That’s what they are there for. In San Leandro it is even possible the cops still respond to stolen vehicle calls.
