Former St. Louis Police Officer Stands Trial for Murder

ST. LOUIS -- The trial of a former St. Louis Police Officer charged with murdering a car chase suspect begins this week.
Jason Stockley will stand trial on first degree murder and armed criminal action charges stemming from the 2011 killing of Anthony Lamar Smith.
St. Louis Circuit Judge Timothy Wilson will decide the case, because Stockley waived his right to trial by jury.
Opening statements will begin tomorrow and the evidence the prosecution will present will include video, including that showing Stockley carrying his personal AK-47 while on duty, telling his partner he’s going to kill the suspect during the chase and Stockley going through his duffel bag in the police car after the shooting. Prosecutors say there’s also the gun recovered from Smith’s car, that contained only Stockley’s DNA.
The judge has barred those involved from talking about the case and will not allow cameras or other recording devices in the courtroom.

It's obvious this cop is being set up. Don't all cops carry their personal AK's on duty?
Just off the top of my head I would say this officer is in deep doodoo.
They sure don't. Many police agencies require that officers carry only department issue firearms and prohibit the carrying of personal weapons on duty.
But the problem for this cop happens to be that he has been recorded - on a dshcam I believe - telling his partner he was going to kill the guy.
I think this cop has a mental problem.
Most Texas departments allow officers to carry their own firearms as long as they are of good quality, minimum and maximum caliber and the officer qualifies with the weapons that he carries on and off duty. Officers can opt to carry a department issued pistol or rifle but most don't. Most department issued pistols have a long hard trigger pull usually over 10 pounds that affect accuracy. Most officers that I have worked with carry a Glock with a 3 1/2 pound trigger pull. AK's are not allowed to be carried by any departments I know of.
