SF COPS AND MAYOR SUED OVER JOURNALIST SEARCH

London Breed, the Mayor of the People.'s Republic of San Francisco and the SFPD are on the receiving end of a lawsuit filed by the First Amendment Coalition, a non-profit organization.

The cops managed to get warrants to search the home, office and telephones of Bryan Carmody. They did not tell the judge(s) who signed the warrants that Carmody is a journalist with a valid police press pass. I guess it slipped their minds.

He wrote some articles about the murder of public defender Jeff Adachi that the mayor and the cops did not like and which clearly came in part from internal police sources. The cops want badly to know who leaked, and are trying to find out by going after Carmody. California has a shield law which largely protects working journalists from having to reveal sources.

The cops are refusing to release records in response to FOIA requests. The cops have been vague and outright contradictory about whether or not there is an active ongoing criminal investigation into the "theft" of the police report in question.
