Vice President Kamala Harris traveled to Florida on Friday, where she addressed the state board of education's approval of new Black history standards in public schools.

The approved standards have drawn controversy as they include the teaching of a perspective that some Black individuals benefited from slavery because it taught them useful skills for their “personal benefit.”

“Just yesterday in the state of Florida, they decided middle school students will be taught that enslaved people benefited from slavery,” Harris said in a recent speech. “They insult us in an attempt to gaslight us, and we will not stand for it.”

During her visit to Jacksonville, Harris discussed the importance of safeguarding fundamental freedoms, particularly the freedom to learn and teach America's comprehensive and accurate history.

We heard from parents, teachers, students, politicians, Jewish leaders and Hispanic leaders and the national president and CEO of NAACP and other organizations from across the state and country.

And their collective message is right in step with the vice president's message — that history must be taught accurately and completely with the good, the bad and the ugly.

When the vice president arrived, she was greeted by a group of community leaders and activists, including Jennifer Jenkins from the Brevard County School Board and civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump.

They all spoke for about an hour or so.

Then, not long after that, Harris took the stage, where she condemned our state's new Black history standards, specifically taking issue with guidelines that slavery was beneficial to enslaved people.

The specific language of the curriculum she takes issue with says "instruction willinclude how slaves developed skills, which in some cases could be applied for their personal benefit."

The other is instruction, including "acts of violence against and by African Americans."

"We teach our children not only to tell the truth but to seek knowledge and truth. It's part of what we know is putting them on the road for them to grow and develop for the sake of our mutual well-being and prosperity. These are the things we tell them. Well, I think we should model what we say," Harris said.

Harris was at the Ritz Theatre and Museum in Jacksonville's historic African American community, Lavilla, which was known as the Harlem of the South in the 1920s to 1960s.

Many felt the location, for that reason alone, was symbolic and appropriate.

Harris concluded her speech Friday, calling this all a distraction creating unnecessary debate to divide our country. She implored everyone not to let it happen.

In response to the Harris' visit, Gov. Ron DeSantis posted on his personal Twitter account:

"Democrats like Kamala Harris have to lie about Florida's educational standards to cover for their agenda of indoctrinating students and pushing sexual topics onto children. Florida stands in their way and we will continue to expose their agenda and their lies," DeSantis wrote on Twitter.

My Golden Retriever would be a better VP than Kamala. She is reasonably bright (for a Golden), reasonably articulate (especially at dinner time) and knows the difference between her asshole and her elbow.
