Spain on Thursday will present the UN General Assembly with a resolution that goes beyond those before it in treating Israel not as the victim of a heinous act of aggression, but essentially as the chief cause of conflict in the world.

The Spanish-penned draft calls on the UN and members states to “take all measures necessary” to compel Israel to comply with Spain’s interpretation of international law.

The wording could very easily support not only economic sanctions against Israel, but even military force. In other words, it’s a declaration of war.

The proposed resolution demands an “immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire” in Gaza and the “immediate, dignified and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups.”

Following the events of Oct. 7, 2023, the end of the Gaza war cannot be unconditional, nor can it be guaranteed as permanent. There must be conditions to ensure it doesn’t happen again, and there must be a credible threat of military retaliation if it does. This is how every war against every defeated aggressor has ended. But in the case of Gaza, Spain expects Israel to effectively surrender.

The charge is being led by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who has taken to parroting the Hamas line that Israel is indiscriminately killing innocent civilians, despite ample evidence that Israel has gone to great lengths keep the ratio of combatants-to-civilians killed to an unprecedented low. The fact that even Hamas had to belatedly acknowledge that its death toll figures were faulty doesn’t seem to have swayed the antagonistic Sánchez.

The truth is that the Sánchez government would be all too pleased to see Hamas win the war, as evidenced by a speech given last year by the prime minister’s deputy, Yolanda Díaz, in which she stated: “Palestine will be free from the river to the sea.” Of course, for that to happen, Israel would need to be destroyed.

Relations between Israel and Spain went sour last year after Madrid unilaterally recognized a Palestinian state and joined South Africa’s genocide lawsuit against Israel at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. This latest stunt will only deepen the rift, as well as foolishly prolong the war by giving Hamas hope.

The Spanish are just pissed because they found out this year that Christopher Columbus was actually a Jew.
