CLASSIFIED AS LOW-RISK OR NON-VIOLENT OFFENDERS (2)

Here is another example of inmates who were classified as low-risk or non-violent offenders before they were released from prison:

NON-VIOLENT NON-DANGEROUS PAROLEES ON TRIAL FOR MULTIPLE RAPES AND MURDERS

Steven Hayes, 46, and Joshua Komisarjevsky, 29, were considered non-serious, non-violent parolees in July 0f 2007 when they broke into an occupied home in Chesire, Connecticut. At the time Dr. William Pettit, his wife Jennifer Hawke-Pettit, and their two daughters Hayley, 17 and Michaele, 11, were home.

They beat Dr. Pettit almost to death and left him hogtied in the basement. They raped Mrs. Petit and 11-year old Michaele over a period of 7 hours. One of them then drove Mrs. Hawke-Pettit to the bank to get money, where she managed to alert bank staff of the situation.

After their return to the house the non-violent non-dangerous parolees set the house on fire. Mr. Pettit survived, his wife and children died of smoke inhalation.

[They] are being tried separately for capital murder. In the old days, they never would have made it that far. I guess we are "better" than that now. I am not completely sure why.
