In an interview with Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC, Sandra Fluke revealed that President Obama had called her following Roach Limburger’s intemperate rant in which the windbag referred to her as a slut and prostitute for complaining that, since Georgetown University’s student health plans do not include coverage of contraceptives for women, she had to spend an ‘entire summer’s salary’ so she could have sex without getting pregnant.
Here is what Fluke, a ‘reproductive rights activist,’ told Mitchell about the president’s call: "He encouraged me and supported me and thanked me for speaking out about the concerns of American women. What was really personal for me was that he said to tell my parents that they should be proud. And that meant a lot because Rush Limbaugh questioned whether or not my family would be proud of me. So I just appreciated that very much."
The American Heritage Dictionary defines slut as “a woman of loose morals.” And Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines slut as “a promiscuous woman.” Since every major religious faith considers sex outside of marriage to be immoral, both definitions pretty well describe Fluke, an unmarried woman who spends $1,000 a year on contraceptives.
So when Obama tells Fluke her parents should be proud, he is in effect saying that her parents should be proud that she’s a slut.
Roach reacted to Obama’s call by telling her parents over the air that, instead of being proud, "I'd be embarrassed. I'd disconnect the phone. I'd go into hiding."
From my point of view, both Limburger and Obama are wrong - Roach for his stupid rant and Obama for all but approving Fluke’s promiscuity. But then both are playing to their base, Limburger to the radical-right and Obama to the radical-left. And, of course, Obama was also playing to the women’s vote, something ole Roach really helped him with.
