HOLSTERS ARE NOT USELESS ACCESSORIES

By Bob Walsh

Sunday night there was a high school graduation in the teeming metropolis of Augusta, Kansas. A man attending the ceremony was sitting in the stadium watching the goings on. He was carrying a small semi-automatic pistol in his sock. The gun became uncomfortable so he reached down to adjust things. He managed to pull the trigger in the process, shooting himself in the foot and a near-by woman in the leg with the ricochet.

Both people were hospitalized. Neither have life-threatening injuries.

It is illegal to carry a firearm on the high school grounds and there are signs posted.

Holsters are useful. Not only do they tend to hold a firearm in place but a proper one covers the trigger guard, which greatly decreases the likelihood of somebody doing something lame like this by accident.

In addition, small semi-automatics, especially cheap ones, often have indifferent manual safeties which can be bumped or rubbed off easily and inadvertently. If you must carry a mouse gun get a proper holster for it. They are not that expensive and can save you a lot of grief.
