Gilbert Rubio, 55, went toes-up in his cell on Death Row at San Quentin yesterday.
Rubio was sentenced to die in September of 2000 for the robbery and murder of a high-school vice principle in Long Beach. Rubio and two accomplices did a home invasion of George Blackwell. While the accomplices, Monica Chavez and Alex Vega, were out cashing a check they forced Blackwell to write, Rubio murdered Blackwell.
The two accomplices are doing life without parole.
Since the death penalty was reactivated in the formerly great state of California in 1978, 13 inmates have been executed, none in the last ten years. Over 100 have died from suicide, homicide or natural causes. There are currently 747 people on condemned status in the CA prison system.
