Correctional Officers employed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons are in fact covered under the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act, which permits most active and honorably retired officers to carry a weapon on them in public. Except....
There are places where this is not valid, such as courtrooms, secure areas of airports, and prison facilities. The BOP specifically prohibits its employees from stashing a weapon in their vehicles at work and does not provide storage for those weapons at the work place. This means that, effectively, BOP correctional officers can not carry to and from work. This has led to at least one murder of a correctional officer while driving to work in a hit hired by convicts.
A bill, just passed by the House, would force the BOP to make legal, safe on-site storage of firearms available to staff members who carry while commuting.

I hope the bill passes.
