Sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong can be very costly, even deadly
Right now the news in Houston is consumed with the death of John Hernandez at the hands of Terry Thompson, the husband of Sheriff’s deputy Shauna Thompson.
Apparently Hernandez was drunk inside a Denney’s restaurant. Shortly before midnight on May 28, Hernandez decided to take a leak. But instead of using Denny’s pisser, he goes outside and pees in the parking lot. At the same time, Terry Thompson arrives with three little daughters in tow, expecting to meet his wife, who was off-duty, at that location. Offended by a drunk peeing in front of his kids, Thompson goes over to have a word with Hernandez.
A tussle ensues during which Thompson, a big fat man, gets the smaller Hernandez face-down on the ground, kneels down on top of him, and puts him in a chokehold. Meanwhile his wife arrives, calls for backup, kneels down beside the pair, and tells Hernandez to “stay the fuck down.” Thompson continues his chokehold until he and his wife discover that Hernandez is no longer breathing. Deputy Thompson then attempts to administer CPR.
Hernandez was taken off of life support three days later. The medical examiner found that Hernandez died as the result of a loss of oxygen to the brain caused by strangulation.
The Thompsons claim that Hernandez attacked Mr. Thompson and that he was merely holding Hernandez until the backup his wife called for would arrive. His attorney insists Thompson was acting in self-defense.
It remains to be seen whether the two Thompsons will face any criminal charges in the death of Hernandez. They would not be in this position if Thompson had minded his own business.
OK, so Thompson’s kids may have seen Hernandez peeing in the parking lot. But if they did, were they so traumatized that Thompson felt compelled to admonish Hernandez?
Terry Thomson will now be out thousands of dollars paying for a lawyer to represent him. He could also possibly spend some time behind bars. Shauna Thompson may end up getting fired and could also possibly be jailed for failing to stop her husband from choking Hernandez.
And because Thompson stuck his nose where it didn’t belong, Hernandez, the father of four, is now dead.
If Thompson had only minded his own business!
UPDATE: This afternoon a grand jury indicted both Thompsons for murder.

I think there will be a thorough investigation. One of the problems we have in our society is everybody minds their own business. Bad things happen when good people allow it to happen. If I had been there with my family and some person was openly peeing in the parking lot and exposing himself, I would have said something. I don't think I would have fought him unless I was forced to defend myself. I would have called the police. This would let my kids know that we shouldn't have to mind our own business when people offend us.
That being said, I feel sorry for the dead guys family, but when you get drunk and do foolish stuff bad things can happen. The restroom wasn't broken at Denny's.
