GOvERNMENTS HATE TO GIVE UP POWER

by Bob Walsh

The government of Spain is demonstrating that now. The region known as Catalonia has just finished attempting to run a referendum on breaking away from the central government and forming their own country. The central government does not approve and sent in the cops to break up the election, which the central government called illegal. Hundreds of people and dozens of cops were hurt.

The Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, announced gleefully that there had in fact been no referendum because the vast majority of Catalans "decided not to participate." He did of course neglect to mention that the cops seized ballot boxes, blocked off polling places and busted heads of those trying to vote.

The referendum is clearly illegal under Spanish law and according to a ruling of their high court. That does not mean the pot will not continue to bubble.
