Tuesday night Parliament voted, by 328 to 301, to attempt to seize control of the Brexit agenda, forcing the PM, Boris Johnson, to call for a new general election. A total of 21 of his own Conservative party members supported the vote. The idea is to make it impossible to the UK to achieve what is called a no-deal Brexit. Johnson is on the record as saying that the vote of the people will be respected and that, on October 31, the UK will be out of the EU whether or not there is an exit deal in place. The original referendum vote took place more than three years ago but a combination of inertia and deliberate interference from the folks who do NOT want the UK to exit from the EU has resulted in the exit being put off and in no actual planning being done to accomplish the goal.
It is unclear whether or not Johnson can get the 2/3 vote for a new general election. Many feel that Johnson would simply place the date for the new election beyond October 31 which would maybe-probably generate a no-deal Brexit by default.
