THE PERILS OF NOT BEING AT THE TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN

You might turn into bear shit

by Bob Walsh

Catherine Sweatt-Mueller, 62, used to live in Minnesota. She was hanging with her parents in their home (cabin actually, remote cabin at that) on Red Pine Island in the middle of Rainy Lake, Canada.

When the Ontario Provincial Police finally showed up they found a black bear standing over Ms. Sweatt-Mueller's corpse. The cops shot and killed the bear. There is, on average, one fatal black bear attack per year in North America. I am sure Ms. Sweatt-Mueller finds that statistic comforting.

Bears are omnivores and are not, generally speaking, afraid of humans. If you insist on living around you should either be constantly armed or you run the risk of turning into bear shit.

I will be in Yellowstone next week. I will not wander off the beaten path. In fact, I doubt if I leave the comfort of my vehicle while touring the area. I'm really looking forward to staying in Teton Village at the base of the mountains.

I have not been there except to drive thru in many years, but it is definitely pretty.
